We’ve greatly enjoyed our time here in Thiré!! As it comes to a close, we are taking the time to reflect on our experiences, and prepare for upcoming concerts. One of the pieces that was included in our recent concert here was François Couperin’s Deuxième Concert Royaux. Jimmy and Han did a wonderful rendition of it. In this video, Morgan joins on the bass line. We are missing Mei, but don’t worry, she’s here in spirit! We hope you enjoy this Allemande fuguée.

Day 24 🎄
The popular holiday tune ”Greensleeves“ can also be found in the collection of tunes by John Playford titled ”The Division Violin.“ Playford wrote 15 variations (divisions) of “Greensleeves” over the passamezzo bassline. In Nomine created a table-book and performed selected variations. Table music, popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, allowed musicians to gather around and play their parts. We cherish this traditional idea of sharing our sound closely.
Thank you so much for counting down to Christmas with us for the last 24 days. This project was very special to us, and we were delighted to share our music with you.
We hope to see you again for the Advent calendar in 2024. Please check our website, www.innomineensemble.com, for more events and the donation page; your support keeps us making music!

Day 23
The soprano aria “Sheep may safely graze” (Schafe können sicher weiden) was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1713 for the cantata Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd, BWV 208, crafting a picturesque pastoral atmosphere.
This beautiful aria has been arranged in various versions and instrumentations. In Nomine creates a warm and peaceful sound with Baroque instruments for the first half of the aria.
Here is the lyric:
Sheep may safely graze and pasture
In a watchful Shepherd’s sight
Sheep may safely graze and pasture
Sheep may safely graze and pasture
In a watchful Shepherd’s sight
In a watchful Shepherd’s sight
Those who rule with wisdom guiding
Bring to hearts a peace abiding
Bless the land with joy made bright
Mmm, oh
Those who rule with wisdom guiding
Bring to hearts a peace abiding
Peace abiding

Bless the land with joy made bright

In a watchful Shepherd’s sight

Day 22
When I am laid, am laid in earth, May my wrongs create No trouble, no trouble in thy breast; Remember me, remember me, but ah! forget my fate. Remember me, but ah! forget my fate.
- “Dido’s Lament” from Henry Purcell’s ‘Dido and Aeneas’
Remembering Ian van Maaren(12.22.1998–11.9.2022)
I think of Ian all the time. I see his face sometimes in strangers and it makes me smile to think of his presence. I know he is in a beautiful and free place now, and I think of our last encounter with fondness. I’ll never forget the laughs we shared over the littlest things.
Dear Ian, our hearts ache that we played this lament instead of singing the Happy Birthday song to you. Ian, we remember you. We miss you, and hope you hear this music wherever you are.
-Your friends Mei, Jimmy, Morgan, and Han-

Day 21
For the winter solstice today, Han and I are sharing “Go nightly cares” from John Dowland’s 1612 A Pilgrimes Solace. I actually discovered this song on Sufjan Stevens’s Christmas album, with the irony being that Sufjan isn’t an early musician and this song isn’t particularly religious nor even a Christmas song. And the text isn’t exactly full of Christmas cheer either—here’s the first verse:
“Go nightly cares, the enemy to rest,
Forbear awhile to vex my grieved sprite,
So long your weight hath lain upon my breast,
That lo I live of life bereaved quite,
O give me time to draw my weary breath,
Or let me die, as I desire the death.
Welcome sweet death, O life, no life, a hell,
Then thus, and thus I bid the world farewell.”
But the second verse is what made me so excited to explore it with Han.
“False world farewell the enemy to rest,
Now do thy worst, I do not weigh thy spite:
Free from thy cares I live for ever blest,
Enjoying peace and heav’nly true delight
Delight, whom woes nor sorrows shall abate,
Nor fears nor tears disturb her happy state
And thus I leave thy hopes, thy joys untrue,
And thus, and thus vain world again adieu.”
The world has felt extra cruel this year, but I’m so drawn to the quiet defiance in the second line in this verse. This is a joyful and celebratory time of year, but the winter solstice is an acknowledgement of the longest night of the year - a day of solitude and reflection. As I look back on this year, this line speaks so much to me. There is so much peace in letting go. There is so much strength in confronting fear calmly. We can all learn to let the enemy rest, and then, free from its cares, we can also live for ever blest.

Day 20
The collection of tunes by John Playford titled, “The Division Violin”, consists of a multitude of popular tunes from the 17th and 18th centuries. A Ground by Mr. Henry Eccles Jr, was printed in this collection in 1705, and contains a wide variety of different divisions over the main theme. These collections were often written over a simple bassline, and it was common to find one part written upside down to ensure that two players could sit on opposite sides of a table and still be able to play the same piece.
Please enjoy Jimmy and Han’s performance of A Ground by Mr. Henry Eccles Jr.

Day 19!
Following Chédeville’s ‘Il Pastor Fido,’ In Nomine brings another Shepherd’s piece for Day 19. ‘King Arthur, Z.628’ is a semi-opera composed by Henry Purcell. In Act 2, the aria ‘How blest are shepherds’ is a pastoral delight, expressing the idyllic and tranquil life of shepherds. The music, characterized by its graceful melody, paints a picturesque scene of rural bliss.
How blest are shepherds, how happy their lasses,
While drums and trumpets are sounding alarms.
Over our lowly sheds all the storm passes
And when we die, ‘tis in each other’s arms
All the day on our herds and flocks employing,
All the night on our flutes and in enjoying.

Day 18
“Il Pastor Fido” (“The Faithful Shepherd”) by Nicolas Chédeville offers a diverse mix of simple French-style movements, gallantries, and original, finely crafted music with powerful compositional ideas. The original title specifies a variety of instruments suitable for performing these sonatas, such as the musette, hurdy-gurdy, flute, oboe, and violin. (Note that Chédeville himself was a musette player!)
In Nomine recreates the festive sounds of “Il Pastor Fido” with violin, bassoon, and harpsichord, infusing the performance with cheerful Christmas energy.

Repost of Day 17; Instagram format got me good and didn’t post the full video! You need the whole video to hear the low A at the end, it’s very important!!
Morgan plays “Now Comes Winter” from Purcell’s iconic opera The Fairy Queen. It’s a lamentful longing tune about winter’s cold grasp. These are the lyrics:
Now winter comes slowly, pale, meager and old
First trembling with age, and then quiv’ring with cold,
Benumb’d with hard frosts, and with snow cover’d o’er,
Prays the sun to restore him, and sings as before.
The music contains Purcell’s classic “lament” motive - the beginning is a slow descending chromatic line in 3. This falling phrase indicates desire and longing.
There’s also some soprano recorder in there. Also, listen for the Low A at the very end!! I stuck a piece of paper in the bell to get it 😉 Hope you enjoy!

Day 15
“Cold and Raw” first appeared with that title in 1690 in a collection of dance tunes compiled by the famous John Playford. Previously, the tune was wildly popular and went by the name “Stingo” and “Oyle of Barley”.
This song can be sung as an air, or played as a fast jig in its original time signature of 6/8. Today, In Nomine violinist Jimmy Drancsak will play the tune in its original 6/8 time signature, and then will arrange the tune to create a reel in 4/4 time. The reel will be played in a rather “New England” fiddle style, paying homage to Cold and Raw’s popularity in The New World.

Day 14 ⭐️
Did you observe the Geminids meteor shower last night?
Han played Gallot’s La Comète on the lute-harpsichord (Lautenwerk). Jacques Gallot, a French lutenist and composer, created this beautiful piece as part of his “Pieces de luth composées sur différens modes,” published around 1685. Considering the date, La Comète might commemorate the first comet discovered by the telescope in 1680 by Gottfried Kirch, a German astronomer.

DAY 12 🎄 Today's tune, "Masters in this Hall," is a 19th century Christmas carol, but the melody first appears in French composer Marin Marais' 1706 opera Alcyone. English poet William Morris wrote the words to this carol around 1860. Here's the first verse and chorus:
Masters in this Hall,
Hear ye news to-day
Brought from over sea,
And ever I you pray:
Nowell! Nowell! Nowell!
Nowell, sing we clear!
Holpen are all folk on earth,
Born is God's son so dear:
Nowell! Nowell! Nowell!
Nowell, sing we loud!
God to-day hath poor folk raised
And cast a-down the proud.

DAY 10
Claude Balbastre (8 December 1724 – 9 May 1799) was a French composer, organist, and harpsichordist. He wrote four suites of ‘Recueil de Noëls’ for organ or harpsichord. In the first suite of ‘Recueil de Noëls,’ Balbastre also included ‘À la venue de Noël,’ akin to Charpentier and Corrette.
In Nomine’s harpsichordist, Han, plays the theme and the first variation on her French-style harpsichord.

Today, Mei and Morgan are playing a piece originally for keyboard; À la venue de Noël from French composer Michel Corrette’s Nouveau Livre de Noëls. Michel Corrette was a prolific composer and organist who lived in Paris in the 18th century. À la venue de Noël is a Baroque French Christmas Carol, and it was arranged by many different composers, including Marc-Antoine Charpentier.
In Corrette’s version, we begin with the classic theme. Then, we divulge into variations, including a Double, a Grand Jeu, and ending with a Trio.
We really enjoyed playing this cute and sweet French Christmas carol, and hope you enjoy! #musician #flute #bassoon #baroque

Day 8!
While its lyrics date back to the 13th century, this traditional Hanukkah tune is still sung in Jewish households all around the world today. Its text combines history and theology of the Jewish faith, and can be heard in a wide variety of arrangements created over the past century.
Please enjoy “Ma’oz Tzur” (Rock of Ages) performed as a duet by Mei Stone and Jimmy Drancsak.
